専門珪藻の系統進化と多様性
研究活動の紹介

私の研究対象は微細藻類(びさいそうるい)です。その名の通り肉眼では見えないくらい小さな藻(も)ですが、実は海や川、少し変わったところだと温泉や南極の氷の中など、水分のあるところなら大抵生育しています。中でも私が特に興味を持っているのが珪藻という10万種以上を含むグループで、細胞の形や遺伝子、生活スタイルや生殖などといった手掛かりをもとに、彼らがいつどうやってこれほど多様化したのか、その進化の過程を明らかにすべく研究を行っています。
