演 題:Genome-guided discovery of natural products and biosynthetic pathways from rarely encountered microorganisms

Microorganisms are a rich source of small organic compounds termed "natural products". Microbial natural products possess a wide variety of useful bioactivities and thus are often pursued as pharmaceuticals. In nature these compounds are synthesised via a myriad of discrete biosynthetic pathways and are encoded on the producing microbe's genome. The genetics underpinning the assembly of such natural products is so well understood that some biosynthesis pathways and indeed their structures can be reliably predicted from DNA sequences alone. This close association between biosynthesis genes and their natural products is driving the new field of "genetics guided natural product discovery". Here I will present some of our recent discoveries resulting from mining some rarely encountered plant-associated microbes.
