Research Interest

Research Field Urban and Regional Environmental Studies, Spatial Planning
Research Summary Previous studies have examined the characteristics of postwar Japanese urban planning and analyzed the practices and theories of architects and planners in the 1960s. This research has evolved in the direction of seeking appropriate methodologies and data collection formats for an integrated analysis of regional transformations. More recently, my research has focused on the formation and transformation of cities and settlements at the intersection of national and international urban and regional policies, urban and regional planning, urbanization, and local culture. My recent interests include integrating environmental ethics and sustainability theory into urban and regional studies. I am particularly interested in innovations that capitalize on and promote the characteristics of cities and settlements, that were shaped after long-term processes.
