Graduate school of Bioscience and Biotechnology

Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology

Featuring a specialized environment equipped with outstanding research facilities, this school produces highly competent human resources with practical skills in the bioscience and biotechnology fields.

This program conducts high-level research and education specializing in academic theories and applications related specifically to bioresources. This program cultivates human resources with an independent truth-seeking spirit, broad and flexible views, a wealth of creativity, as well as competent practical abilities based on both fundamental and advanced expertise in their specified areas. The program shares academic information with local communities and promotes stronger ties with other universities in Japan and abroad.

This teaching staff includes full-time instructors from a number of areas and part-time instructors who are active in the front lines of their specialized field. The school is fully equipped with cutting-edge technology and facilities, including a conservatory, mass-culture facility, plant field, and water tank to reproduce the effect of the earth's rotation. In such a special learning environment, students can engage in research into the basics of bioscience and biochemistry. They can also address pioneering challenges in front-line fields concerning the development and utilization of bioresources and the breakthrough and application of biofunction research.

Major Programs in the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology

Major in Bioscience and Biotechnology (Master's and Doctoral Programs)

Featuring local characteristics with a wealth of nature, this program conducts research in the development, cultivation and utilization of a diversity of bioresources, such as microorganisms, animals and plants. With these bioresources as materials, the program is engaged in the study of biofunctions, such as genes, enzymes, proteins, and metabolic products at the molecular level and promotes applied research based on the findings of such studies. Furthermore, it conducts research into ways of maintaining harmony with the environment through practical research of the utilization of effective microorganisms and preservation efforts for valuable botanical resources.

Major in Marine Bioscience and Biotechnology (Master's and Doctoral Programs)

The program conducts research and study of marine environments, including Wakasa Bay near the university with the aim of sustainable utilization of marine bioresources. Research includes the study of actual marine organisms, the study of the marine ecosystem and its surroundings, the study and application of biochemical properties and food material properties for biogenic substances in marine organisms, and the fundamental study of the development of new functional foodstuffs.
